HSBCO is hosting a conference with a topical theme - “Preparing for a downturn – how to get your business in shape if the economy takes a dip”. The event takes place at HSBC Canada Square, London EC1., 29th July

The audience will primarily be owner-directors and directors of UK SMEs, across all sectors - companies in the £1m to £25m turnover range.

Dawn's speech will be preceded by a presentation about the current state of the UK economy and future prospects, from Mark Berrisford-Smith, HSBC senior economist, .

Dawn will address

Where should the balance lie between sensible, responsible cost-cutting and a more proactive identification of new markets?

Is a different kind of leadership required in a downturn than in a boom period? What qualities of management do you look for in your own team during such a period?

Which key financial indicators would you keep front-of-mind if your business is watching order books fall?

Should owner-directors take comfort in new elements of the business environment - ie, new technology that enables efficiencies; emergence of a global marketplace; greater opportunity for networking and mentoring among peers than in previous downturns?

After Dawn's session, the panel (other business leaders and entrepreneurs) will explain their own strategies for beating the downturn.
